October 22nd is National Stuttering Awareness Day

By, Carrie Ravine

Yes, I know, it’s Back to the Future Day.  While that IS very exciting, another important day is tomorrow.

It doesn’t have to do with Marty McFly or Doc Brown, but it does have to do with something that Marc Anthony, Emily Blunt, Tim Gunn, Samuel L. Jackson, and Wayne Brady all have in common.

All of those people listed are just a few of the many people who stutter.  October 22nd is International Stuttering Awareness Day, so I wanted to share with you some things you might not know about stuttering.
1% of the world’s population stutter

·         Stuttering usually begins in childhood, between 2-5 years of age

·         There are many types of stuttering behavior (repeating sounds or words, blocking (no sounds coming out)or  prolonging sounds

·         People generally do not stutter when they sing or whisper

·         There is no cure for stuttering.  But there are effective treatments available for children and adults who stutter

The National Stuttering Association (westutter.org) is a great resource to find more information on stuttering.

At LLA Therapy, we host the Akron Chapter National Stuttering Association Stuttering Support Group.  We meet in the lobby of our Fairlawn office on the third Monday of every other month.

Our next meeting is December 21st at 6:00. Contact Carrie at cravine@llatherapy.org with any questions.
