5 Things to Teach Your Child about Bullying

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. It is the responsibility of parents to initially teach their children about bullying and how to stop it from happening. Here are somethings that our children need to know.

What Kids Should Know

1. Don't be a bystander

If you see something, say something. Tell a responsible adult about what you are seeing.

2. Don't encourage the bully

Don't laugh at bullying or be a member of the audience that watches it as it happens. This only supports the bully and encourages them to continue bullying others.

3. Do whatever you can to help the victim

While you may not be able to stop the bullying as it is happening, make sure to support and encourage the victim in private. Let them know that you care about them and that you are there if they want to talk to you.

4. Make new friends

If you see someone that looks lonely or is sitting by themselves, introduce yourself and do your best to include them.

5. Encourage others to be supportive

Be a leader and show others that being friendly and supportive can help to control and prevent bullying.
