As an Occupational Therapist working in the field of pediatrics, I am fortunate enough that my day often consists of playing with kids. Parents and other professionals may wonder why they observe their students or child going to therapy to play games. “Play with a purpose” is what I often respond with. Play is the main occupation or role of a child through which they learn and develop a variety of skills such counting, colors, social skills, motor coordination, etc.
My Favorite Games For OT
The games that we play in OT are selected not only for the fact that they are fun and motivating for kids, but also have therapeutic value. I would like to take this time to highlight my favorite games that I incorporate in my treatment.
Catch the Match
This is a quick and easy game that develops visual perception needed for activities such as writing and reading.
Kerplunk
This game encourages fine motor coordination and pincer grasp needed to complete activities such as buttoning, zipping, and shoe-tying. Kids love watching all the marbles fall and crash!
Tricky Fingers
This game addresses skills such as visual tracking and finger dexterity through patterning and racing against a partner.
Squigz
Kids love this game that develops hand strength and coordination. I love seeing their imagination shine and seeing what creatures or structures they build.
Giggle Wiggle
This enthusiastic wiggling caterpillar can help skills including fine motor coordination and in-hand manipulation.
